Skipper Rohit Sharma shows his Sourav Ganguly streak

Mumbai: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma etched another milestone in his illustrious career by surpassing Sourav Ganguly to become India’s third-highest run-getter in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

Rohit achieved the feat during the second ODI against Australia, following a measured yet classy innings of 73 runs off 97 balls, featuring seven fours and two towering sixes. The knock, though uncharacteristically restrained, reflected the veteran’s adaptability and composure against a disciplined Australian bowling attack.

With this innings, Rohit’s ODI tally now stands at 11,249 runs in 275 matches at an impressive average of 48.69, including 32 centuries and 59 half-centuries, with a career-best score of 264 — the highest individual score in ODI history. He surpassed Ganguly’s record of 11,121 runs in 308 matches, which the former India captain scored at an average of 40.95. Among Indian batters, only Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs) and Virat Kohli (14,181 runs) are ahead of Rohit on the all-time list.

Rohit’s latest milestone adds another chapter to his storied international career. Since 2022, he has registered 19 scores of fifty or more, showcasing remarkable consistency even as he continues to evolve his approach in limited-overs cricket. His calm innings against Australia marked just the second time in recent years that he crossed fifty at a strike rate below 100 — the last instance being a composed 50 against England during the 2023 ICC World Cup.

In 2025, Rohit has accumulated 383 runs in 10 ODI innings at an average of 38.30, including a century and two fifties. Australia currently lead the three-match series 1-0, after opting to bowl first in the ongoing second ODI.
